Walk/Run to Remember: One of Carson City's Most Meaningful Events Returns September 26, 2026

When people think about community events in Carson City, they often think about festivals, farmers markets, concerts, and holiday celebrations. But one of the most meaningful events of the year is one that brings our community together for a cause that touches nearly every family in some way.

The annual Walk/Run to Remember returns to downtown Carson City on Saturday, September 26, 2026, and I hope you'll consider joining us.

This event was founded by my friend and colleague, Brenda Collings of Dickson Realty, and has grown into one of Northern Nevada's most heartfelt fundraising events benefiting Alzheimer's and dementia awareness. What started as a local fundraiser has become a community tradition that brings together runners, walkers, caregivers, families, businesses, and supporters from across Carson City and the surrounding area. The event benefits efforts to end Alzheimer's and support families affected by dementia.

Why This Event Matters So Much to Me

This isn't just another charity event on my calendar.

My grandfather passed away from Alzheimer's disease, and today my Mimi is living with dementia. Watching someone you love slowly lose pieces of themselves is one of the hardest experiences a family can face.

My Mimi was always polished, elegant, vibrant, and incredibly sharp. She was the kind of woman who lit up a room. Seeing dementia gradually change someone you love is heartbreaking because the person is still there, but the disease slowly steals memories, independence, and sometimes even recognition of the people they cherish most.

Anyone who has walked alongside a loved one with Alzheimer's or dementia understands that the disease affects far more than the individual. It impacts spouses, children, grandchildren, caregivers, and entire families.

That is why events like Walk/Run to Remember are so important.

A Carson City Event for Everyone

One of the things I love most about this event is that you do not need to be a runner to participate.

Whether you're a serious runner, casual jogger, weekend walker, or simply someone who wants to support a great cause, there is a place for you.

This year the event includes both a 5K and an 8K option, making it accessible for participants of all ages and fitness levels. The event begins at McFadden Plaza in downtown Carson City, creating a fun and energetic atmosphere right in the heart of our community.

Participants can enjoy:

  • A 5K walk or run
  • An 8K walk or run
  • Live music
  • Vendor booths
  • Raffle prizes
  • Costume contests celebrating purple, the color associated with Alzheimer's awareness
  • Community resources for caregivers and families affected by dementia

The event is designed to be family-friendly, welcoming, and fun while still honoring the individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Growing Community Support in Carson City

The Walk/Run to Remember has become one of the most well-attended charitable running events in Carson City. Previous events have brought together more than 100 runners and walkers, along with volunteers, local businesses, sponsors, and community organizations.

What makes this event special isn't just the number of participants. It's the stories behind every registration.

Some participants walk in memory of a loved one. Others walk beside a parent, grandparent, or spouse currently battling dementia. Many simply show up to support research, awareness, and the families navigating an incredibly difficult journey.

When you stand at the starting line, you quickly realize this is about much more than miles.

It's about memories.

Supporting Alzheimer's Awareness in Northern Nevada

Alzheimer's disease affects millions of Americans, and the numbers continue to grow as our population ages. The Alzheimer's Association provides education, support programs, caregiver resources, and funding for research aimed at finding better treatments and ultimately a cure.

Locally, Northern Nevada families have access to support groups, educational programs, caregiver resources, and community outreach programs that help families navigate the challenges of dementia care.

Fundraising events like Walk/Run to Remember help bring attention to these resources while raising critical funds and awareness.
